Trag­i­cal­ly, between 2000 and 2017 there were 894 wind and 1417 tor­na­do-relat­ed deaths. In 2017, 36 per­cent of the wind and 63 per­cent of the tor­na­do-relat­ed fatal­i­ties hap­pened either in a mobile or per­ma­nent home. A wind-resis­tant design is crit­i­cal to a home­’s integri­ty and a family’s safe­ty.

Although R‑values are con­sid­ered to be the stan­dard mea­sure for insu­la­tion, they are not the whole sto­ry when it comes to choos­ing insu­la­tion.

Research by Texas Tech Wind Sci­ence and Engi­neer­ing Research Cen­ter has demon­strat­ed that ICF walls bet­ter pro­tect occu­pants of hous­es from wind­blown debris, than frame walls. Being hit by wind­blown debris is the most com­mon cause of injury dur­ing tor­na­does.

Improv­ing the insu­la­tion of block walls sig­nif­i­cant­ly enhances ener­gy effi­cien­cy, com­fort, and dura­bil­i­ty in both res­i­den­tial and com­mer­cial spaces. Block walls, often made of con­crete mason­ry units (CMUs), are stur­dy but noto­ri­ous­ly poor at retain­ing heat with­out prop­er insu­la­tion.

A few sur­viv­ing hous­es caught the eye of media out­lets around the world, seem­ing­ly untouched by Hur­ri­cane Michael’s destruc­tion. What made these hous­es dif­fer­ent?
