The envi­ron­men­tal impact of build­ings is a key con­cern in mod­ern con­struc­tion, focus­ing on reduc­ing car­bon emis­sions. A clear under­stand­ing of embod­ied and oper­a­tional car­bon, along with their dif­fer­ences, is essen­tial for sus­tain­able con­struc­tion strate­gies.

For gen­er­a­tions, the con­struc­tion of exte­ri­or walls has fol­lowed tra­di­tion­al prac­tices that have pri­mar­i­ly involved wood or steel fram­ing. These meth­ods have been the back­bone of res­i­den­tial and light com­mer­cial con­struc­tion, by pro­vid­ing shel­ter, sta­bil­i­ty, and a cer­tain lev­el of insu­la­tion.

The chal­lenge for this build was to cre­ate a home that would appeal to a sophis­ti­cat­ed buy­er with fea­tures that an emp­ty nester mov­ing from a larg­er more expan­sive home would enjoy. The result is an ener­gy effi­cient home which cre­ative­ly uses space in an attrac­tive, lux­u­ri­ous, and cost effec­tive way.

Fox Blocks donat­ed Insu­lat­ed Con­crete Forms (ICF) to the Habi­tat For Humanity’s 30^th Annu­al Jim­my and Ros­alynn Carter Work Project. The vol­un­teers and mate­ri­als donat­ed by Fox Blocks will help rebuild the home of Elmer Lamberson’s whose home was lost in Super­storm Sandy.
